Commission Starts Selection Procedure for Operators of Pan-European Mobile Satellite Services

A competition for providers of communication services via satellite across Europe has been launched by the European Commission. Satellite operators will for the first time be able to offer services such as high speed data, mobile TV, disaster relief and remote medical services under a single European selection procedure instead of under 27 different national systems.

EU: Crop yield forecasts for 2008

Favourable weather conditions and an increase in the planted area farmed should lead to a total cereals harvest close to 301 M tonnes for this year in the European Union, 43 M tonnes more than in 2007. This represents an increase of 16% on the 2007 harvest and 9% on the past five years' average production.

Emissions Trading: Commission to Cconnect EU with UN Carbon Credit Registry before December

The European Commission, Member States and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat have successfully completed all the testing required for connecting to the UN's international carbon credit registry. The EU's Community Independent Transaction Log (CITL) and Member State registries will be connected to the UN's International Transaction Log (ITL) before December 2008 at the latest. The link will mean carbon credits issued under the Clean Development Mechanism can be transferred to the registries of EU Member States.

Volume of Retail Trade Down by 0.6% in Euro Area in June 2008

In June 2008, compared with May 2008, the volume of retail trade fell by 0.6% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.0% in the EU27. In May retail trade increased by 0.5% and by 0.9% respectively. In June 2008, compared with June 2007, the retail sales index decreased by 3.1% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

Industrial Producer Prices Up By 0.9% In Euro Area

In June 2008 compared with May 2008, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.9% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.2% in the EU27. In May, prices increased by 1.2% and 1.4% respectively.

E-commerce Sales in France will reach €20.9 billion this year

Online merchants in France took in €1 billion ($1.71 billion) during Q2 2008, according to the Association pour le commerce et les services en ligne (ACSEL) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
