European Union Agrees To Maintain Trade Preferences For Developing Countries

The European Commission has welcomed the adoption by EU Member States of a new Regulation applying the EC's Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) for the period from 1 January 2009 until the end of 2011. This decision will allow the EU to maintain preferential access to its market for 176 developing countries. The renewed preference system will be updated and improved, ensuring that GSP is targeted at those countries that need it most. GSP provides real economic value to developing countries, with €57 billion worth of trade under the scheme in 2007.

€ 45.7 Million EU Support for the Promotion of Agricultural Products

The European Commission has approved 31 programmes in 16 Member States (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom) to provide information on and to promote agricultural products in the European Union.

CoR Backs Job Mobility Action Plan

The Committee of the Regions (CoR) wants local and regional authorities to be given a central role in the EU's new job mobility action plan, which aims to encourage free movement of labour and boost employment opportunities to meet the challenges of globalisation and ageing in Europe.

Transparency International (TI) expressed its deep concern over high-level corruption, organised crime and mismanagement in Bulgaria, and supports the European Commission’ decision to freeze funds worth hundreds of millions of euros to the country, on the back of reports it published.

EU Trade: More Than 40 bn Euro Of Goods Traded With South Africa In 2007

Between 2000 and 2007, EU27 exports of goods to South Africa rose from 11.8 billion euro to 20.5 bn, while imports increased from 14.7 bn to 20.9 bn. As a result, the EU27 deficit in trade with South Africa fell from 2.9 bn in 2000 to 0.4 bn in 2007. In 2007, South Africa accounted for around 1.5% of the EU27's external trade in goods, and was the EU27's twelfth most important trading partner.

EU27 Current Account Deficit 26.5 bn Euro: First Quarter of 2008

According to the latest revisions, the EU27 external current account recorded a deficit of 26.5 billion euro in the first quarter of 2008, compared with a deficit of 30.4 bn in the first quarter of 2007 and a deficit of 7.3 bn in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Industrial New Orders Down By 3.5% in Euro Area in May 2008

In May 2008 compared with April 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index fell by 3.5%. In April the index rose by 2.0%. In the EU27 new orders decreased by 4.7% in May 2008 after growing by 3.6% in April. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders declined by 2.5% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU27.

Protection Of The EU's Financial Interests: The Need For Cooperation With The Member States

The European Commission published the 2007 annual report on the protection of the Communities’ financial interests and the fight against fraud, a field for which the Commission and the Member States have a shared responsibility. The report gives a statistical overview of all irregularities notified to the Commission by the Member States, and indicates those cases where fraud is suspected.

Construction Output Up By 0.2% In The Euro Area in May 2008

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production increased by 0.2% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.3% in the EU27 in May 2008, compared to the previous month. In April, production decreased by 0.6% and 0.5% respectively.

Euro Area External Trade Deficit 4.6 Bn Euro in May 2008

The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in May 2008 gave a 4.6 bn euro deficit, compared with +1.4 bn in May 2007. The April 2008 balance was +2.5 bn, compared with +2.0 bn in April 2007. In May 2008 compared with April 2008, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 3.4% and imports by 1.3%.
