Improved EU-wide cooperation between customs authorities has led to an increase in the number of dangerous consumer products - from teddy bears to hairdryers, cleaning sprays, mini-motorbikes, cigarette lighters and ski boot bindings - removed from the EU market last year. The Annual (RAPEX) Report on dangerous consumer products published by the European Commission shows that toys took over from electrical appliances as the product category most often notified.

The European Commission has adopted the Communication Global Europe: A Stronger Partnership to deliver Market Access for European exporters. This strategy for breaking down trade barriers abroad and creating new export opportunities is part of the Commission's new Global Europe trade policy framework. The centre-piece of this new approach is a new decentralised partnership between the Commission, Member States and business on the ground in third countries where local expertise makes trade barriers easier to identify and tackle.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production grew by 0.9% in the euro area (EA13) and by 0.6% in the EU27 in February 2007, compared to the previous month. In January, production increased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU27. Compared to February 2006, output in February 2007 gained 10.4% in the euro area and 9.2% in the EU27, after rises of 9.1% in the euro area and 9.2% in the EU27 in January.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA13) trade balance with the rest of the world in February 2007 gave a 1.7 bn euro deficit compared with -3.3 bn in February 2006. The January 2007 balance was -7.0 bn, compared with -9.9 bn in January 2006. In February 2007 compared with January 2007, exports, seasonally adjusted, rose by 0.6% and imports by 2.3%.
