Euro area annual inflation was 1.8% in February 2007, unchanged compared with January. A year earlier the rate was 2.3%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in February 2007. EU annual inflation was 2.1% in February 2007, unchanged compared with January. A year earlier the rate was 2.2%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in February 2007.

Total hourly labour costs in the euro area (EA12) rose at an annual rate of 2.4% in nominal terms in the fourth quarter of 2006, down from 2.5% in the previous quarter. In the EU25 the annual rise was 2.7% in the fourth quarter of 2006, down from 3.0% in the previous quarter.

Fitch highlights the importance of economic flexibility and solid fiscal finances for euro area countries in a report published today, "Competitiveness and Adjustment in the Euro Area". The agency comments that euro area ("EA") economies continue to experience booms or slumps in output growth away from the EA average, which the currency bloc's centralised monetary policy cannot be used to mitigate.
