E-commerce seems to be the key to further opening the retail internal market, as 57% of retailers say they now sell via the internet. But more than two thirds of them sell exclusively domestically. And of the 29% who do sell cross-border most do to only or two other Member States. More would like to sell cross-border (48% of EU retailers are prepared to do so).

The European Commission today agreed upon a comprehensive strategy for the European car industry, to keep the manufacturing of motorcars viable on a long term basis, at prices affordable to consumers. The strategy encompasses a variety of areas, such as reduction of administrative burdens, environmental sustainability, road safety, trade and overseas markets and research.

The European Commission decided to open a formal investigation procedure under EC Treaty state aid rules into planned reductions of the Dutch tax rates for net interests received on intra-group loans under a scheme called 'Groepsrentebox'. The opening of an in-depth investigation enables also interested third parties to submit their comments on the proposed measures but does not prejudge the outcome of the inquiry.

In December 2006, compared to December 2005, the volume of retail trade grew by 2.1% in the euro area (EZ12)2 and by 3.3% in the EU25. Compared to November 20063, the retail sales index rose by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU25. The average volume of retail trade index for 2006, compared to 2005, increased by 1.4% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU25.

Euro area (EA12) seasonally-adjusted unemployment stood at 7.5% in December 2006, compared to 7.6% in November. It was 8.4% in December 2005. The EU25 unemployment rate was 7.6% in December 2006, the same as November. It was 8.5% in December 2005.

The January Bloomberg Eurozone Retail Purchasing Managers' Index ("PMI(R)"), an indicator based on a mid-month survey of economic conditions in the euro area retail sector and providing data one month ahead of government issued figures, fell sharply from 52.1 in December to 47.9 in January after allowing for seasonal influences. The index fall was the second-largest in the three-year history of the survey and, by slipping below the 50.0 no-change level, indicated the first drop in retail sales for ten months, with sales falling at a rate not seen for 23 months.

In 2005, the total volume of gas consumed in the UK was 1,096,351 gigawatt hours (GWh) and sales were worth £16.43bn. The domestic sector accounted for the largest share of demand, followed by the electricity-generation sector. Gas is increasingly being used for power generation because it produces less `greenhouse gas' emissions than coal.
