EU Should Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 20%

The European Union should make a binding commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in relation to 1990 values and to increase by 20% the share of renewable energies. That is the goal Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has set her sights on. At the end of the first working day of the European Council meeting in Brussels, she appeared confident that on this point the Member States would reach agreement.

EU25 current account deficit 79.4 bn euro

The EU25 external current account recorded a deficit of 6.9 billion euro in the fourth quarter of 2006, compared with a deficit of 26.3 billion euro in the fourth quarter of 2005 and a deficit of 21.7 billion euro in the third quarter of 2006.

Russian Retail Lending Up 91% in 2006

According to an Alfa-Bank analysis entitled "Mortgage growth as an accelerator of retail lending", the Russian retail lending market grew 91% in 2006 to $78.4 bln, equal to 8% of GDP. Within this figure, the highest growth rates were demonstrated by mortgage lending.

Volume of retail trade down by 0.1% in euro area

In January 2007, compared to January 2006, the volume of retail trade fell by 0.1% in the euro area (EA13) and rose by 1.4% in the EU27. Compared to December 2006, the retail sales index decreased by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU27.

Euro area and EU25 GDP up by 0.9%

Euro area (EA12) and EU25 GDP both grew by 0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2006, compared to the previous quarter, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the third quarter of 2006, growth rates were +0.6% in both the euro area and the EU25.
