Euro area annual inflation was 1.9% in May 2007, unchanged compared with April. A year earlier the rate was 2.5%. Monthly inflation was 0.2% in May 2007. EU annual inflation was 2.1% in May 2007, down from 2.2% in April. A year earlier the rate was 2.4%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in May 2007.

European Union agriculture ministers reached political agreement on a new regulation on organic production and labelling, which will be simpler for both farmers and consumers. The new rules set out a complete set of objectives, principles and basic rules for organic production, and include a new permanent import regime and a more consistent control regime.

EU transport ministers, at a meeting chaired by the German Council President, Wolfgang Tiefensee, unanimously adopted the Council Conclusions on a "European Energy Strategy for Transport". They had discussed climate change, energy and transport for the first time at the March Council meeting, under the German Presidency, and laid the groundwork for this decision.

The seasonally adjusted number of persons employed in the euro area (EA13) rose by 0.4% (533 000 persons) during the first quarter of 2007, according to provisional national accounts estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

The European Commission presents a new publication on Europe’s position in research and innovation. The “Key figures 2007 on Science, Technology and Innovation” shows that R&D intensity (R&D expenditure as % of GDP) in Europe has stagnated since the mid-nineties, while major competitors such as Japan, China or South Korea have been able to increase substantially their R&D effort, shaping a world where knowledge is more evenly distributed than ever before.

In the EU25 in 2005, the organic area made up 3.9% of the total utilised agricultural area. The highest proportions of organic area were recorded in Austria (11.0%), Italy (8.4%), the Czech Republic and Greece (both 7.2%) and the lowest in Malta (0.1%), Poland (0.6%) and Ireland (0.8%). Looking at a longer time frame, for which EU15 data is available, the proportion of organic area in the total utilised agricultural area has increased from 1.8% in 1998 to 4.1% in 2005.

Seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.8% in the euro area (EA13) in April 2007 compared with March 2007. Production rose by 0.5% in both March and February. In the EU27 output fell by 0.4% in April, after increases of 0.5% in March and 0.4% in February. In April 2007 compared with April 2006, industrial production rose by 2.8% in the euro area and by 3.2% in the EU27.
