MEPs meeting next week in Strasbourg will have the task of adopting the EU's draft 2008 budget as it receives its first reading on Tuesday. For the first time ever there is more money allocated for growth and job creation than for agriculture. The EP's Budget Committee has already looked at the € 129 billion proposals and called for more funding for the Galileo satellite system, the planned European Technology Institute and the EU's commitments in Kosovo and the Palestinian territories.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.4% in the euro area (EA13) and by 1.0% in the EU27 in August 2007, compared with the previous month. In July, production fell by 0.1% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. Compared with August 2006, output in August 2007 gained 2.8% in the euro area and 4.0% in the EU27. In July the annual growth was 1.4% in the euro area and 0.0% in the EU27.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA13) trade balance with the rest of the world in August 2007 gave a 1.3 bn euro surplus, compared with -5.2 bn in August 2006. The July 2007 balance was +5.7 bn, compared with +1.1 bn in July 2006. In August 2007 compared with July 2007, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 4.9% and imports by 2.0%.

The European Commission called for a renewed commitment to social justice by proposing a new, holistic approach to tackling poverty and promoting inclusion of people furthest from the labour market. While the EU strategy for growth and jobs is showing good results, Europe needs to do more to realise its full potential and achieve greater social justice and economic cohesion. The new strategy for 'active inclusion', which is taking shape through a wide-ranging public consultation, is a key element of the European Social Agenda.
