In September, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) continued to decrease in both the EU and the euro area. It dropped by 2.3 points in the EU and by 2.8 points in the euro area, to 110.8 and 107.1 respectively. However, despite the declines observed in the third quarter, the indicator remains well above its long-term average in both areas.

Workers in Portugal report overall satisfaction with their working conditions – on a par with workers in the EU27 Member States, the fourth European Working Conditions Survey reveals. However, while one in three Portuguese workers thinks they have good career prospects, a significantly lower proportion of Portuguese workers than the EU average feel they are well paid for the work they do. Also, two out of ten workers are afraid of losing their job in the coming six months, an indicator significantly higher than in the rest of Europe.

The high level of the consumer climate in the summer months has not been sustained in September. All three main indicators of the consumer mood are slightly down. Due to the most recent developments of the consumer climate, GfK has decreased its forecast growth of private consumption from 1.0 to 0.6% for 2007 as a whole. Following the revised 7.4 points in September, the consumer climate forecast for October is 6.8 points.

Over the last few decades, there has been growing concern about global warming and climate change caused by greenhouse gases (GHG) - emissions from human activities that involve fossil fuel combustion. In 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Kyoto Protocol, signed by 84 countries, under which all the major industrialized nations must limit their GHG emissions and bring them back down to 1990 levels.
