Sustaining Ukraine’s strong economic growth will require firm action to cut red tape and bring down barriers to competition, says a new OECD report. It adds that opening up markets to domestic as well as foreign entrants would boost productivity growth while public administration reform and a stronger legal system are needed to improve the business climate and tackle corruption.

Euro area (EA13) seasonally-adjusted unemployment stood at 6.9% in July 2007, unchanged compared to June. It was 7.8% in July 2006. The EU27 unemployment rate was 6.8% in July 2007, compared with 6.9% in June. It was 7.9% in July 2006.

In August, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) stabilised in the EU and continued to decrease in the euro area. The indicator decreased by 0.1 of a point in the EU and by 1.0 point in the euro area, to 113.2 and 110.0 respectively. However, in both areas, the indicator still stands well above its long-term average.

Greenpeace made a legal submission to the European Commission arguing that Poland’s draft national legislation on the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is fully consistent with EU law. Greenpeace made its submission in the context of a formal European Commission notification procedure on the draft Polish law. This procedure could represent the first step of a challenge by the EU Executive of the Polish national GMO law.

The Bloomberg Eurozone Retail Purchasing Managers' Index ("PMI(R)"), an indicator based on a mid-month survey of economic conditions in the euro area retail sector and providing data one month ahead of government issued figures, rose back above the 50.0 no-change mark in August to 51.0, indicating growth of Eurozone retail sales. Though only modest, the expansion in August was a considerable improvement on July's marked contraction (as signaled by a thirty-eight month index low of 46.2) and represented the first increase in sales in four months.

A survey conducted for the European Commission by Eurobarometer confirms that a significant majority of people in EU Member States support efforts to intensify co-operation with the countries neighbouring the Union. The overwhelming majority of those polled believe that working with neighbours on fighting organised crime and terrorism, on environment and energy, on economic development, immigration, democracy, education and training is important.

GDP grew by 0.3% in the euro area (EA13) and by 0.5% in the EU27 during the second quarter of 2007, compared with the previous quarter, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the first quarter of 2007, growth rates were +0.7% in both the euro area and the EU27.
