EU27 Trade with China Grew by 150% Between 2000 and 2006

China and India play an increasing role in EU27 trade. China, which was the fourth trading partner of the EU27 in 2000, has since 2003 become the second trading partner after the USA. India, which was the 17th trading partner in 2000, ranked ninth in 2006.

Employment in Europe 2007

In 2006, labour markets in the EU made a robust recovery, thanks to economic upswing and labour market reforms in many EU Member States. After rather modest increases in previous years, average employment growth in the EU-27 picked up significantly in 2006 and, at 1.4%, was at its strongest since 2000. For the first time in at least a decade, employment expanded across the entire EU, with all 27 Member States showing a rise in employment.

The European Commission Suggests Ways to Improve Administrative Cooperation in the Fight Against VAT Fraud

As a follow-up of the Communication for a European strategy to combat tax fraud and on request of the ECOFIN Council in June 2007, the European Commission has adopted a communication containing a number of key elements for improving Member States' capacity to tackle VAT fraud, in particular missing trader fraud (carousel fraud). The purpose of the Communication is to seek political guidance for future work from the ECOFIN Council meeting on 4 December 2007.

EU: More Science Funding Needed to Meet CO2 Targets for Car Industry

Research funding needs to be increased to meet binding CO2 targets in the car industry, says the Industry Committee's report on a competitive automotive regulatory framework (CARS 21). The committee adds that cars should be permitted to emit more CO2 if these emissions result from mandatory safety measures, and that intellectual property rights must be effectively protected worldwide.

Euro Area Balance of Payments in September 2007

The working day and seasonally adjusted current account of the euro area was close to balance in September 2007, reflecting surpluses in goods and services which were nearly offset by the deficit in current transfers. In the financial account, combined direct and portfolio investment recorded net inflows of EUR 24 billion.

EU: Call for Greater Flexibility on Lower Rates of VAT

While supporting the extension of some temporary measures allowing specific Member States to impose lower than standard rates of VAT on certain goods and services, the Economics Committee argues that all Member States should be able to use lower rates, if they wish, for locally supplied services and for basic goods and services where there is a clear social, economic or environmental benefit from doing so.

Industrial New Orders Down by 1.6% in Euro Area in September 2007

The euro area (EA13) industrial new orders index fell by 1.6% in September 2007 compared with August 2007. The index rose by 0.8% in August. EU27 new orders decreased by 2.1% in September 2007, after an increase of 1.0% in August. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4 industrial new orders dropped by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27 in September 2007.
