In October 2007 compared with September 2007, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.6% in the euro area (EA13), and by 0.9% in the EU27. In September, prices increased by 0.4% and 0.5% respectively. In October 2007 compared with October 2006, industrial producer prices gained 3.3% in the euro area and 3.5% in the EU27.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico told MEPs from the Economics Committee on Monday that his country would meet the criteria for adopting the euro with effect from January 2009. He said this would not require his government to curtail its public spending plans. The meeting also heard from Slovakia's Finance Minister and central bank Governor.

The euro area (EA13) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.2% in October 2007, compared with 7.3% in September. It was 8.0% in October 2006. The EU27 unemployment rate was 7.0% in October 2007, the same as September. It was 7.8% in October 2006. In October 2007, the lowest rates were registered in Denmark (2.9%) and the Netherlands (3.1%), the highest in Slovakia (11.2%) and Poland (8.8%).

As at mid-2006, women aged over 45 made up 21.2% of the UK population. This percentage is forecast to grow to 22.6% by 2012, and to 23.9% by 2021. This section of the population is made up of women with very different experiences of life — the older groups with experience of post-war austerity and the younger groups with `baby-boomer' expectations of a comfortable and materially well-provided for, and long, life.

Euro area (EA13) grew by 0.7% and EU27 GDP by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2007, compared with the previous quarter, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the second quarter of 2007, growth rates were +0.3% in the euro area and +0.5% in the EU27.

In November, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) weakened further in both the EU and the euro area. It decreased by 2.0 points in the EU and by 1.2 points in the euro area, to 107.6 and 104.8 respectively; but still remains well above its long-term average in both areas.
