In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 0.6% in the euro area (EA13) and by 0.7% in the EU27 in December 2007 compared with the previous month. In November, production decreased by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27. Compared with December 2006, output in December 2007 declined by 3.3% in the euro area and by 4.0% in the EU27. Compared with 2006, the average construction output for 2007 increased by 3.7% in the euro area and by 3.9% in the EU27.

Analysis of recent Eurostat figures in a new report released today confirms the ongoing steady improvement in the European labour market. As a result, total employment reached 223 million, reflecting an annual increase of over 3.5 million and an increase of over 800,000 from the previous quarter. The EU labour market has continued to benefit from healthy levels of economic growth and ongoing confidence of firms, as well as improvements resulting from past structural reforms.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA13) trade balance with the rest of the world in December 2007 gave a 4.2 bn euro deficit, compared with +2.4 bn in December 2006. The November 2007 balance was +3.0 bn, compared with +5.3 bn in November 2006. In December 2007 compared with November 2007, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 2.5% while imports rose by 0.7%.

GDP grew by 0.4% in the euro area (EA13) and by 0.5% in the EU27 during the fourth quarter of 2007, compared with the previous quarter, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the third quarter of 2007, growth rates were +0.8% in both the euro area and the EU27.
