Fitch: Financial Pressures Build on Russia and its Banks

Fitch Ratings says today that a series of adverse shocks and mounting pressures in the banking sector have tilted risks more to the downside although, as signalled by their Stable Outlooks, Fitch does not currently expect to change Russia's Long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default ratings of 'BBB+'.

Euro Area Securities Issues Statistics in July 2008

The annual growth rate of the outstanding amount of debt securities issued by euro area residents increased from 6.8% in June 2008 to 7.0% in July. For the outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents, the annual growth rate was 0.7% in July 2008, the same as in June.

European Institutions Take Lead on PPP Expertise

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission have launched the European PPP Expertise Centre (EPEC) to enable public authorities in the EU Member and Candidate Countries to become more effective participants in PPP transactions.

Construction Output up by 0.1% in the Euro Area in July 2008

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production increased by 0.1% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.2% in the EU27 in July 2008, compared with the previous month. In June, production decreased by 0.9% and 0.7% respectively.

Euro Area External Trade Deficit 2.3 bn euro in July 2008

The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in July 2008 gave a 2.3 bn euro deficit, compared with +5.0 bn in July 2007. The June 2008 balance was -0.2 bn, compared with +7.5 bn in June 2007. In July 2008 compared with June 2008, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 3.7% and imports by 5.8%.

European Insurers Affected by the General Fall in Equity Prices

Kopernikus is the new name of the European Commission’s earth observation activities previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) so far. The objective of Kopernikus is to monitor the state of the environment on land, at sea and in the atmosphere and to improve the security of the citizens in a world facing an increased risk of natural and other disasters.

The Conference Board announced that the leading index for Spain declined 0.4 percent and the coincident index increased 0.3 percent in July.

Call For a More Ambitious Global Alliance Against Climate Change

The global alliance aimed at helping developing countries to fight climate change should receive at least 25% of the revenue of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, according to the EP Development Committee. In a report adopted on Monday, MEPs also question the sustainability criteria of biofuels.

Euro Area Annual Inflation Down to 3.8% in August 2008

Euro area annual inflation was 3.8% in August 2008, down from 4.0% in July. A year earlier the rate was 1.7%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in August 2008. EU annual inflation was 4.2% in August 2008, down from 4.4% in July. A year earlier the rate was 1.9%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in August 2008.
