At primary level, the number of pupils per teacher varies significantly between Member States. In 2009 they ranged from around 10 pupils on average per teacher in Malta, Lithuania, Denmark and Poland to nearly 20 pupils per teacher in France and the United Kingdom. In the EU27, there were on average 15 pupils per teacher in 2009.

In August 2011 compared with July 2011, the euro area (EA17) industrial new orders index rose by 1.9%. In July the index dropped by 1.6%. In the EU27 new orders increased by 0.4% in August 2011, after a fall of 0.6% in July. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders rose by 0.7% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27.

In 2010, the government deficit of the euro area (EA17) increased and that of the EU27 decreased in absolute terms compared with 2009, while the government debt and GDP rose in both zones. In the euro area the government deficit to GDP ratio decreased slightly from 6.4% in 2009 to 6.2% in 2010, and in the EU27 from 6.9% to 6.6%. In the euro area the government debt to GDP ratio increased from 79.8% at the end of 2009 to 85.4% at the end of 2010, and in the EU27 from 74.7% to 80.2%.

According to the latest available data, the EU27 external current account recorded a deficit of 35.2 billion euro in the second quarter of 2011, compared with a deficit of 32.3 bn in the second quarter of 2010.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.2% in the euro area (EA17) and remained stable in the EU27 in August 2011, compared with the previous month. In July, production increased by 1.8% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU27. Compared with August 2010, output in August 2011 increased by 2.5% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU27.

The first estimate for euro area (EA17) trade with the rest of the world in August 2011 gave a 3.4 bn euro deficit, compared with -6.3 bn euro in August 2010. The July 2011 balance was +2.5 bn, compared with +4.6 bn in July 2010. In August 2011 compared with July 2011, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 4.7% and imports by 2.7%.
