In March 2012, compared with February 2012, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.5% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.6% in the EU27. In February prices increased by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively. In March 2012 compared with March 2011, industrial producer prices gained 3.3% in the euro area and 3.8% in the EU27.

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.9% in March 2012, compared with 10.8% in February. It was 9.9% in March 2011. The EU27 unemployment rate was 10.2% in March 2012, stable compared with February. It was 9.4% in March 2011.

In the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with the third quarter of 2011, the household saving rate increased while the household investment rate remained almost unchanged in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27. In the euro area, household disposable income decreased by 0.4% in real terms, after -0.3% in the previous quarter.

The average hourly labour costs were estimated to be €23.1 in the EU27 business economy in 2011, and €27.6 in the euro area (EA17). However, this average masks significant differences between Member States, with hourly labour costs ranging from €3.5 to €39.3. Labour costs are made up of costs for wages & salaries, plus non-wage costs such as employer's social contributions.

In 2011, the government deficit of both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27 decreased in absolute terms compared with 2010, while the government debt rose in both zones. In the euro area the government deficit to GDP ratio decreased from 6.2% in 2010 to 4.1% in 2011, and in the EU27 from 6.5% to 4.5%. In the euro area the government debt to GDP ratio increased from 85.3% at the end of 2010 to 87.2% at the end of 2011, and in the EU27 from 80.0% to 82.5%.

Healthy life years measure the number of years that a person can expect to live in a healthy condition. When considering the population aged 65 years, life expectancy is provisionally estimated at 21.0 years for women and 17.4 years for men in the EU27 in 2010. As regards healthy life years, women at the age of 65 in the EU27 in 2010 were expected to live a further 8.8 years in a healthy condition, and men 8.7 years.

Among the 42 million part-time workers in the EU27 in 2011, 8.6 million wished to work more hours, were available to do so and can therefore be considered to be underemployed. These accounted for 20.5% of part-time workers and 4.0% of total employment. In 2010, the corresponding figures were very similar: 41.3 million persons worked part time and 8.5 million were underemployed.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 7.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 3.7% in the EU27 in February 2012, compared with the previous month. In January, production decreased by 0.5% and 3.9% respectively. Compared with February 2011, output in February 2012 dropped by 12.9% in the euro area and by 9.4% in the EU27.

According to the latest available data, the EU27 external current account recorded a surplus of 13.1 billion euro in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared with a deficit of 14.5 bn in the fourth quarter of 2010. This is the first current account surplus recorded for the EU27 since the third quarter of 2002.
