In May 2011 compared with April 2011, the euro area (EA17) industrial new orders index rose by 3.6%. In April the index fell by 0.1%. In the EU27 new orders gained 2.5% in May 2011, after an increase of 0.3% in April. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 3.0% in the euro area and by 2.5% in the EU27.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 1.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.9% in the EU27 in May 2011, compared with the previous month. In April, production increased by 1.2% in the euro area, but decreased by 0.5% in the EU27.

Rightmove have recorded that the average monthly asking price for property coming to market has fallen for the first time this year. After six consecutive months of rising prices, July has seen a fall of 1.6% (£3,797), eating into the gain of 8.1% over the first half of the year. With around 70% of property marketed so far in 2011 still on the market, new sellers will need an edge over their competition to increase their chances of sales success.

The first estimate for euro area (EA17) trade with the rest of the world in May 2011 was in balance, compared with a deficit of 4.9 bn euro in May 2010. The April 2011 balance was -4.8 bn, compared with -0.8 bn in April 2010. In May 2011 compared with April 2011, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 1.5% and imports by 0.2%.

On average in 2010, foreign citizens living in the EU27 were significantly younger than the population of nationals (median age2 34.4 years compared with 41.5 years).
