The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. increased 0.3 percent, and The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) remained unchanged in July.

GDP increased by 0.2% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27 during the second quarter of 2011, compared with the previous quarter, according to second estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the first quarter of 2011, growth rates were +0.8% in the euro area and +0.7% in the EU27.

In July 2011, compared with June 2011, the volume of retail trade grew by 0.2% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27. In June retail trade rose by 0.7% and 0.5% respectively.

In August, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) declined by 5.0 points to 97.3 in the EU and by 4.7 points to 98.3 in the euro area. This decline resulted from a broad-based deterioration in sentiment across the sectors, with losses in confidence being particularly marked in services, retail trade and among consumers. Only the construction sector in the euro area recorded an improvement.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the Euro Area increased 0.3 percent in July to 108.8 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent decrease in June and a 0.1 percent decrease in May.

The annual growth rate of the broad monetary aggregate M3 stood at 2.0% in July 2011, compared with 1.9% in June 2011. The three-month average of the annual growth rates of M3 in the period from May 2011 to July 2011 stood at 2.1%, compared with 2.0% in the period from April 2011 to June 2011.

In June 2011 compared with May 2011, the euro area (EA17) industrial new orders index fell by 0.7%. In May the index rose by 3.6%. In the EU27 new orders decreased by 0.3% in June 2011, after an increase of 1.2% in May. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders declined by 3.0% in the euro area and by 2.2% in the EU27.
