Euro Area Securities Issues Statistics: September 2008

The annual growth rate of the outstanding amount of debt securities issued by euro area residents decreased from 7.8% in August 2008 to 7.1% in September. For the outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents, the annual growth rate was 0.8% in September 2008, the same as in August.

European Summit on the Equality of Men and Women in Working Life

On 13 and 14 November the French Presidency of the European Union organised a conference in Lille on the equality of men and women in working life. At the same time, an informal meeting of ministers responsible for equal opportunities is being held to discuss the pay gap and making use at European level of good business practices.

Euro Area External Trade Deficit 5.6 bn Euro

The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in September 2008 gave a 5.6 bn euro deficit, compared with +2.9 bn in September 2007. The August 2008 balance was -9.4 bn, compared with +1.1 bn in August 2007. In September 2008 compared with August 2008, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 2.2% and imports by 2.1%.

Lisbon Conference: European Commission Steps Up Efforts to Improve Member States' Financial Controls on Structural Funds

The conference "Use and control of EU structural funds" follows the publication, on Monday 10 November, of the annual report of the European Court of Auditors, which encouraged the Commission to continue in its efforts to help Member States address weaknesses in management and control systems for the Structural Funds.

Euro area annual inflation was 3.2% in October 2008, down from 3.6% in September. A year earlier the rate was 2.6%. Monthly inflation was 0.0% in October 2008.

Euro Area and EU27 GDP Down by 0.2%: Third Quarter of 2008

GDP declined by 0.2% in both the euro area (EA15) and the EU27 during the third quarter of 2008, compared with the previous quarter, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In the second quarter of 2008, growth rates were -0.2% in the euro area and 0.0% in the EU27.

EU: Safeguarding Security of Natural Gas Supply

Natural gas is currently the second most important fuel in the EU's energy mix, representing roughly a quarter of EU gross inland consumption. Possible gas supply crises could have very high economic and social impacts. Therefore the EU needs to be prepared to tackle security of supply in an effective way.

Taxation of Savings: The European Commission Proposes Changes to Eliminate Tax Evasion

The European Commission has adopted an amending proposal to the Savings Taxation Directive, with a view to closing existing loopholes and eliminating tax evasion. Since 2005, the Savings Directive ensures that paying agents either report interest income received by taxpayers resident in other EU Member States or levy a withholding tax on the interest income received.
