The EU and China are becoming more interdependent, says European Parliament in a report adopted by MEPs, which means that EU-China relations require greater co-ordination among the Member States and with the Commission. Noting an imbalance in bilateral trade between the two partners - notably through China's inobservance of sustainable development, environmental limits and WTO rules - MEPs call on China to meet its obligations and on the EU to provide assistance and promote co-operation.

Fitch Ratings said in a new report that the anticipated economic slowdown affecting Poland's economy, and more difficult and costly access to external funding in the form of bank loans and bonds, will negatively impact the Polish corporate sector in 2009. Another challenge is a marked depreciation of the Polish zloty against the euro and US dollar since September 2008, which has negatively impacted companies with substantial foreign currency-denominated debt that were not able to offset the zloty's depreciation with currency hedging.

More than half of EU citizens and nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide have access to the Internet. Yet, despite the fact that one out of three EU citizens conducts online purchases, only 30 million carry out cross-border shopping in the EU. Ministers have expressed deep concern about the serious situation that the sector is facing at present, putting at risk a very significant number of jobs. In 2008 there were about 8% fewer cars sold in the EU than in 2007.

The sanctions directive sets out that employers of illegal immigrants would be penalised while the immigrants themselves would be granted legal conditions of employment. MEPs are calling for criminal law sanctions in the most serious cases and want to make companies responsible for the actions of their subcontractors.

The European Commission adopted a Green Paper setting out the future challenges of its policy for a trans-European transport network (TEN-T). TEN-T policy needs to be realigned to contribute more effectively to objectives aimed at combating climate change and to support Europe's increasing international role through better infrastructure connections with its neighbours and the wider world.

The European Commission welcomes the report adopted by the European Parliament setting out recommendations for future EU policy on climate change. The approval of the final report from the Temporary Committee on Climate Change shows the Parliament's strong support for ambitious EU action to address the climate challenge. Its recommendations are in line with the Commission's thinking set out in last week's Communication on a new global climate agreement.
