In 2009, EU27 FDI (foreign direct investment) in extra-EU27 countries (outflows) fell by 24%, from 348 billion euro in 2008 to 263 bn in 2009, while FDI into the EU27 from the rest of the world (inflows) increased by 12%, from 199 bn to 222 bn.

In April 2010 compared with March 2010, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index rose by 0.9%. In March the index increased by 5.1%. In the EU27, new orders decreased by 0.2% in April 2010, after a rise of 7.1% in March. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU27.

In 2008, there were 26 000 campsites in the EU27 with an estimated total of around 10 million bed places. Since 2000, the number of nights spent on campsites in the EU27 has remained relatively stable and amounted to 354 million nights in 2008. Nights spent on campsites represented 15% of all nights spent in collective tourist accommodation establishments.

In April 2010 the seasonally adjusted current account of the euro area recorded a deficit of EUR 5.1 billion. In the financial account, combined direct and portfolio investment recorded net inflows of EUR 19 billion (non-seasonally adjusted).

The EU27 Member States granted protection to 78 800 asylum seekers in 2009 compared with 75 100 in 2008. The largest groups of beneficiaries of protection status in the EU27 were citizens of Somalia (13 400 persons or 17% of the total number of persons granted protection status), Iraq (13 100 or 17%) and Afghanistan (7 100 or 9%).
