Between 2000 and 2008 EU27 trade in goods with China more than tripled in value, with EU27 exports to China rising to 78 billion euro in 2008 compared with 26 bn in 2000, and imports rising to 248 bn from 75 bn. As a result, the EU27 trade deficit with China increased significantly, reaching 169 bn in 2008, compared with 49 bn in 2000.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA16) trade balance with the rest of the world in March 2009 gave a 0.4 bn euro surplus, compared with -2.3 bn in March 2008. The February 20092 balance was -1.0 bn, compared with +1.7 bn in February 2008. In March 2009 compared with February 2009, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 1.4% and imports by 0.6%.

GDP declined by 2.5% in both the euro area (EA16) and the EU27 during the first quarter of 2009, compared with the previous quarter, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In 2008, intra-EU27 FDI flows dropped by 42% compared with 2007.

In March 2009 compared with February 2009, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 2.0% in the euro area (EA16) and by 1.9% in the EU27. In February production decreased by 2.5% and 2.2% respectively. In March 2009 compared with March 2008, industrial production declined by 20.2% in the euro area and by 18.8% in the EU27.
