Retail business in the single currency area continued to worsen during May, according to the Bloomberg Euro-Zone Retail Purchasing Managers' Index ("PMI(R)"), based on a mid-month survey of more than 1,000 executives in the euro area retail sector issued one month ahead of government-issued figures. Remaining below 50.0 and signaling contraction of monthly sales, the seasonally adjusted PMI registered 47.1 in May. The decline in the index from 48.4 in April pointed to a slightly faster rate of decline.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index™ (LEI) for the Euro Area increased 1.8 percent in April to 93.8 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent decrease in March and a 0.2 percent fall in February. All of the components made positive contributions to the index this month.

Fitch Ratings' European Senior Credit Investor Survey for March 2009 shows a minor calming of investors' negative risk perceptions. Although the recession is anticipated to last longer in some key regions, asset class conditions are viewed as slightly better by respondents to the latest edition of the quarterly survey.

In 2007, one third of the EU27 population lived in a household that couldn't afford an unexpected expenditure, corresponding in each Member State to a set share of the national at-risk-of poverty threshold. In the EU27, 7% of population lived in a household that had been unable to pay as scheduled utility bills for their main dwelling in the last 12 months and 3% in a household that had been unable to pay either rent or mortgage payment.

The European Commission has adopted a Communication on Financial Supervision in Europe. The Communication proposes a set of ambitious reforms to the current architecture of financial services committees, with the creation of a new European Systemic Risk Council (ESRC) and European System of Financial Supervisors (ESFS), composed of new European Supervisory Authorities. Legislation to embody these proposals will follow in the autumn. The Commission also invites all interested parties to submit their reactions on the Communication before 15 July.

In March 2009 compared with February 2009, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index fell by 0.8%. In February the index remained unchanged. In the EU27 new orders declined by 0.7% in March 2009, after dropping by 1.2% in February. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders decreased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27.

Russia has been looked upon as an unfavourable market for electronics manufacturing by foreign electronics manufacturers in the past. This negative perception has been in spite of the country's cost-competitive advantages as well as its growing domestic market. However, liberalisation coupled with heightened demand from key end-user segments such as consumer electronics is aiding the growth of the electronics manufacturing market in Russia.
