In June 2014 compared with May 2014, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade increased by 0.4% in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.3% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May retail trade increased by 0.3% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU28.

In June 2014, compared with May 2014, industrial producer prices rose by 0.1% in both the euro area (EA18) and the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May prices fell by 0.1% in both zones.

The euro area (EA18) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.5% in June 2014, down from 11.6% in May 20144, and from 12.0% in June 2013. This is the lowest rate recorded since September 2012. The EU28 unemployment rate was 10.2% in June 2014, down from 10.3% in May 2014, and from 10.9% in June 2013. This is the lowest rate recorded since March 2012.

In 2013 in the EU28, the unemployment rate for non-EU citizens (21.3%) aged 20 to 64 was more than twice the level for citizens of the reporting country (10.0%), referred to as “nationals”. However, the share of people unemployed for 12 months or more was at almost the same level for non-EU citizens (48.6%) and for nationals (49.4%).

The household saving rate in the euro area was 13.0% in the first quarter of 2014, stable compared with the fourth quarter of 2013. In the EU28, the household saving rate was 10.6%, also stable compared with the
previous quarter.

In 2013, in the EU28, 81% of government debt was financed by issuing securities (bills, bonds, etc. excluding shares and financial derivatives), 16% by loans and 4% by currency and deposits.

In April retail trade decreased by 0.2% in the euro area and rose by 0.2% in the EU28. In May 2014 compared with May 2013 the retail sales index increased by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU28.

The job vacancy rate in the euro area (EA18) was 1.7% in the first quarter of 2014, up from 1.6% recorded both in the previous quarter and in the first quarter of 2013, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The job vacancy rate in the EU28 was 1.6% in the first quarter of 2014, up from 1.5% recorded in the previous quarter and in the first quarter of 2013.

Euro area annual inflation was 0.5% in May 2014, down from 0.7% in April. A year earlier the rate was 1.4%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in May 2014.
