In June 2009 compared with May 2009, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index rose by 3.1%. In May the index decreased by 0.5%. In the EU27 new orders fell by 0.4% in June 2009, after rising by 0.5% in May. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production decreased by 1.1% in the euro area (EA16) and by 3.3% in the EU27 in June 2009, compared with the previous month. In May, production fell by 2.0% and 2.5% respectively.

In June 2009 the working day and seasonally adjusted current account of the euro area recorded a deficit of EUR 5.3 billion. In the financial account, net inflows of EUR 37 billion (non-seasonally adjusted) were observed in combined direct and portfolio investment.

As of 1 January 2010, the EU will invest € 18 million into research that will underpin next generation 4G mobile networks. The European Commission just decided to start the process of funding research on Long Term Evolution (LTE) Advanced technology, that will offer mobile internet speeds up to a hundred times faster than current 3G networks.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA16) trade balance with the rest of the world in June 2009 gave a 4.6 bn euro surplus, compared with 0.0 bn in June 2008. The May 20092 balance was +2.1 bn, compared with -3.8 bn in May 2008. In June 2009 compared with May 2009, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 0.1%, while imports remained stable.
