Volume of retail trade up by 0.9% in euro area in June 2007

In June 2007, compared to June 2006, the volume of retail trade grew by 0.9% in the euro area (EA13) and by 2.2% in the EU27. Compared to May 2007, the retail sales index rose by 0.4% and 0.5% respectively.




Annual changes

In June 2007, compared to June 2006, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” fell by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27. The non food sector increased by 2.1% and 4.1% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in sixteen Member States and fell only in Germany (-2.5%). The largest increases were observed in Latvia (+24.4%), Lithuania (+16.1%), Estonia (+13.0%) and Poland (+9.2%).

Monthly changes

In June 2007, compared with May 2007, “food, drinks and tobacco” remained unchanged in the euro area and increased by 0.1% in the EU27. The non food sector rose by 0.8% and 0.9% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in fifteen Member States, fell in Slovakia (-0.3%) and remained unchanged in the United Kingdom. The largest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+10.2%), Denmark (+3.1%), Portugal (+2.3%), Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden (all +2.0%).
