Volume of Retail Trade up by 0.6% in Euro Area in November 2008

In November 2008, compared with October 2008, the volume of retail trade grew by 0.6% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.3% in the EU27. In October retail trade fell by 1.0% and 0.5% respectively. In November 2008, compared with November 2007, the retail sales index decreased by 1.5% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In November 2008, compared with October 2008, "food, drinks and tobacco" rose by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27. The non food sector increased by 0.6% and 0.4% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in ten and fell in nine. The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+3.7%), France (+1.8%) and Poland (+1.3%), and the largest decreases in Portugal (-1.4%), Belgium and Estonia (both -1.1%), Lithuania and Slovakia (both -1.0%).

Annual changes

In November 2008, compared with November 2007, retail trade of "food, drinks and tobacco" fell by 1.3% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU27. The non food sector declined by 1.5% in the euro area, but rose by 0.1% in the EU27.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in seven, fell in eleven and remained unchanged in Sweden. The highest increases were observed in Romania (+6.8%), Poland (+6.2%) and Slovenia (+5.4%), and the largest decreases in Latvia (-15.1%), Estonia (-9.3%) and Spain (-7.8%).
