Volume of Retail Trade Stable in Euro Area

In June 2010, compared with May 2010, the volume of retail trade remained stable in the euro area (EA16) and increased by 0.1% in the EU27. In May retail trade rose by 0.4% and 0.6% respectively.

In June 2010, compared with June 2009, the retail sales index gained 0.4% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In June 2010, compared with May 2010, “Food, drinks and tobacco” fell by 0.7% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. The non food sector rose by 0.3% and 0.5% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in eleven, remained stable in two and declined in six. The highest increases were observed in Romania (+3.1%), Slovakia (+2.6%), Belgium and Poland (both +1.6%), and the largest decreases in Malta (-1.6%), France (-1.3%) and Portugal (-1.1%).

Annual changes

In June 2010, compared with June 2009, “Food, drinks and tobacco” rose by 0.1% in the euro area, but fell by 0.2% in the EU27. The non food sector gained 1.4% and 2.1% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in twelve and declined in seven. The highest increases were observed in Romania (+4.3%), Belgium (+4.1%) and Finland (+3.0%).The largest decreases were observed in Lithuania (-8.7%), Bulgaria (-6.8%) and Estonia (-4.1%).
