Volume of Retail Trade Down by 0.6% in Euro Area in June 2008

In June 2008, compared with May 2008, the volume of retail trade fell by 0.6% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.0% in the EU27. In May retail trade increased by 0.5% and by 0.9% respectively. In June 2008, compared with June 2007, the retail sales index decreased by 3.1% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In June 2008, compared with May 2008, “food, drinks and tobacco” decreased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27. The non food sector fell by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in four, fell in thirteen and remained unchanged in Denmark. The highest increases were observed in Romania (+4.1%) and Sweden (+1.7%), and the largest decreases in Austria (-4.1%), Lithuania (-2.8%), Portugal (-2.3%) and Latvia (-2.2%).

Annual changes

In June 2008, compared to June 2007, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” fell by 4.4% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU27. The non food sector declined by 2.2% and by 0.1% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in nine and fell in nine. The highest increases were observed in Romania (+23.3%), Slovenia (+5.7%) and Poland (+5.2%), and the largest decreases in Latvia (-8.3%), Spain (-7.7%) and Estonia (-7.2%).
