Industrial Production Down by 1.7% in Euro Area in December 2009

In December 2009 compared with November 2009, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.7% in the euro area (EA16) and by 1.9% in the EU27. In November production grew by 1.4% and 0.9% respectively.

In December 2009 compared with December 2008, industrial production declined by 5.0% in the euro area and by 4.9% in the EU27.

Compared with 2008, the average production index for 2009 fell by 14.9% in the euro area and by 13.9% in the EU27.

Monthly comparison

In December 2009 compared with November 2009, production of intermediate goods decreased by 2.4% in the euro area and by 2.6% in the EU27. Capital goods fell by 1.6% and 2.4% respectively. Durable consumer goods rose by 0.7% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU27. Non-durable consumer goods grew by 1.0% and 0.3% respectively. Energy increased by 2.1% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU27.

Among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production fell in twelve, rose in six and remained stable in France. The largest falls were registered in Denmark (-5.2%), Ireland and Latvia (both -4.2%), Poland (-2.8%) and Germany (-2.6%), and the highest increases in Lithuania (+2.3%), Portugal (+0.7%), the United Kingdom (+0.6%) and Spain (+0.5%).

Annual comparison

In December 2009 compared with December 2008, production of capital goods fell by 13.5% in the euro area and by 11.4% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods dropped by 6.7% and 3.7% respectively. Energy declined by 3.4% in the euro area and by 4.5% in the EU27. Intermediate goods decreased by 0.3% and 1.1% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods grew by 1.0% in the euro area, but fell by 0.4% in the EU27.

Industrial production fell in all Member States for which data are available, except Romania (+6.9%), Poland (+4.8%), Slovenia (+2.7%) and the Netherlands (+1.1%). The largest decreases were registered in Denmark (-19.3%), Bulgaria (-12.1%), Estonia (-10.7%) and Lithuania (-8.3%).
