Industrial Producer Prices Up By 1.2% In Euro Area

In May 2008 compared with April 2008, the industrial producer price index1 rose by 1.2% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.3% in the EU27. In April, prices increased by 0.9% and 1.1% respectively.

In May 2008 compared with May 2007, industrial producer prices gained 7.1% in the euro area and 8.9% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In May 2008, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector rose by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector increased by 4.1% and 3.3% respectively. Intermediate goods gained 0.5% in the euro area and 0.7% in the EU27. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.1% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. In both zones, capital goods increased by 0.2% and durable consumer goods by 0.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Denmark (+3.0%), Greece and the United Kingdom (both +1.7%). The only decrease was recorded in Sweden (-0.3%).

Annual changes

In May 2008, compared with May 2007, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 3.8% in the euro area and by 4.3% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 18.2% and 22.7% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 4.8% in the euro area and 5.2% in the EU27. Intermediate goods increased by 4.3% and 5.2% respectively. Durable consumer goods gained 2.3% in both zones. Capital goods rose by 1.8% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were observed in Denmark (+18.4%), the United Kingdom (+16.5%) and Lithuania (+15.1%), and the lowest in the Czech Republic (+5.2%) and Sweden (+5.7%).
