Industrial Producer Prices Down by 1.9% in Euro Area in November 2008

In November 2008 compared with October 2008, the industrial producer price index fell by 1.9% in the euro area (EA15) and by 2.1% in the EU27. In October, prices decreased by 0.8% and 1.1% respectively.

In November 2008 compared with November 2007, industrial producer prices increased by 3.3% in the euro area and by 4.1% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In November 2008, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector fell by 0.8% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector decreased by 5.1% and 5.8% respectively. Capital goods gained 0.1% in the euro area and 0.2% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods remained unchanged in both zones. Non-durable consumer goods dropped by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. Intermediate goods declined by 1.6% and 1.3% respectively.

Prices in total industry fell in all Member States for which data are available. The largest falls in the total index were registered in Denmark (-5.8%), Greece and the Netherlands (both -3.7%), and the smallest in Slovakia and Sweden (both -0.1%) and Luxembourg (-0.2%).

Annual changes

In November 2008, compared with November 2007, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 2.3% in the euro area and by 3.1% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 6.3% and 6.6% respectively. Intermediate goods gained 2.7% in the euro area and 3.6% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods increased by 2.5% and 2.7% respectively. Capital goods rose by 2.2% in the euro area and by 2.9% in the EU27. Non-durable consumer goods gained 1.9% and 2.9% respectively.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were observed in Luxembourg (+20.9%), Romania (+11.1%) and Hungary (+10.8%), and the lowest in Denmark (+0.9%), the Czech Republic (+1.3%) and France (+1.6%), while prices remained stable in Greece.
