Industrial New Orders Up By 2.5% In Euro Area in April 2008

In April 2008 compared with March 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index rose by 2.5%. In March the index fell by 1.2%. In the EU27 new orders grew by 3.6% in April 2008 after declining by 1.0% in March. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders increased by 2.2% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU27.

In April 2008 compared with April 2007, industrial new orders increased by 11.7% in the euro area and by 14.2% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment grew by 11.8% in the euro area and by 12.4% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In April 2008 compared with March 2008, new orders for textiles & textile products increased by 5.6% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU27. Basic metals & fabricated metal products rose by 3.2% and 3.9% respectively. Manufacturing of machinery & equipment gained 2.6% in the euro area and 4.0% in the EU27. Electrical & electronic equipment rose by 2.2% and 4.4% respectively. Transport equipment increased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 5.3% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products decreased by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively.

In April 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in fourteen and fell in five. The highest increases were recorded in Greece (+13.5%), Lithuania (+12.9%) and Estonia (+8.7%), and the largest decreases in Ireland (-13.8%) and Romania (-3.5%).

Annual changes

In April 2008 compared with April 2007, new orders for machinery & equipment increased by 17.2% in the euro area and by 19.0% in the EU27. Manufacturing of electrical & electronic equipment rose by 16.7% and 14.3% respectively. Basic metals & fabricated metal products grew by 14.3% in the euro area and by 15.9% in the EU27. Transport equipment gained 10.1% and 15.7% respectively. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products increased by 6.7% in the euro area and by 8.6% in the EU27. Textiles & textile products rose by 4.0% and 5.5% respectively.

In April 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in eighteen and fell only in Ireland (-6.3%). The highest increases were registered in Denmark (+43.6%), Latvia (+41.6%), Lithuania (+35.8%) and Romania (+33.6%).
