Industrial New Orders Up By 1.0% In Euro Area in July 2008

In July 2008 compared with June 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index grew by 1.0%. In June the index dropped by 0.5%. In the EU27 new orders increased by 2.3% in July 2008, after remaining stable in June. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders fell by 1.4% in the euro area and by 3.6% in the EU27.

In July 2008 compared with July 2007, industrial new orders grew by 1.6% in the euro area and by 2.8% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment dropped by 2.1% in the euro area and by 2.2% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In July 2008 compared with June 2008, new orders for transport equipment rose by 10.0% in the euro area and by 17.4% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products grew by 1.1% and 0.4% respectively. Textiles & textile products gained 0.8% in the euro area and 0.3% in the EU27. Manufacturing of machinery & equipment fell by 1.1% and 3.5% respectively. Electrical & electronic equipment decreased by 1.8% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products declined by 2.4% and 2.2% respectively.

In July 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in thirteen and fell in six. The highest increases were recorded in Estonia (+9.9%), Italy (+5.9%) and France (+4.3%), and the largest decreases in Lithuania (-2.6%), Sweden (-2.2%) and Poland (-2.1%).

Annual changes

In July 2008 compared with July 2007, new orders for chemicals & chemical products grew by 7.0% in the euro area and by 5.8% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products rose by 4.9% and 5.7% respectively. Transport equipment gained 4.8% in the euro area and 9.3% in the EU27. Manufacturing of electrical & electronic equipment decreased by 2.1% and 3.3% respectively. Textiles & textile products fell by 4.3% in the euro area and by 3.6% in the EU27. Machinery & equipment declined by 6.3% and 7.4% respectively.

In July 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in eleven and fell in eight. The highest increases were registered in Romania (+29.2%), Latvia (+26.2%) and Estonia (+23.0%), and the most significant falls in Denmark (-11.2%), Poland (-4.3%), and Sweden (-2.9%).
