Industrial New Orders Down in EU27 and Euro Area in December 2007

In December 2007 compared with November 2007, the euro area (EA13) industrial new orders index fell by 3.6%. In November the index grew by 2.0%. In the EU27 new orders decreased by 1.2% in December and by 0.2% in November. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders lost 0.8% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU27.

In December 2007 compared with December 2006, industrial new orders increased by 2.1% in the euro area and by 7.5% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment grew by 3.3% in the euro area and by 6.6% in the EU27.

Compared with 2006, the average new orders index for 2007 increased by 8.2% in the euro zone and by 10.1% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In December 2007 compared with November 2007, new orders for electrical & electronical equipment rose by 1.6% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products decreased by 0.6% and 3.1% respectively. Machinery & equipment declined by 1.1% in both zones. Textiles & textile products lost 1.7% in the euro area and 1.5% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products fell by 4.0% and 3.5% respectively. Transport equipment decreased by 10.0% in the euro area and by 4.4% in the EU27.

Among the Member States for which data are available for December 2007, total manufacturing working on orders rose in seven and fell in twelve. The highest increases were recorded in Latvia (+23.2%), Poland (+11.3%) and Romania (+6.9%), and the largest decreases in Bulgaria (-14.0%), Denmark (-9.6%), and Italy (-8.1%).

Annual changes

In December 2007 compared with December 2006, new orders for machinery & equipment increased by 6.5% in the euro area and by 7.4% in the EU27. Manufacturing of electrical & electronic equipment grew by 4.3% and 7.4 % respectively. Chemicals & chemical products rose by 2.8% in the euro area and by 4.4% in the EU27. Basic metals & fabricated metal products increased by 1.5% in the euro area, but fell by 0.2% in the EU27. Manufacture of transport equipment fell by 1.5% in the euro area, but gained 15.7% in the EU27. Manufacturing of textiles & textile products decreased by 4.0% and 2.6% respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available for December 2007, total manufacturing working on orders rose in ten and fell in nine. The highest increases were registered in Poland (+87.3%), Romania (+31.5%) and Lithuania (+19.9%), while the largest decreases were recorded in Bulgaria (-11.2%), Ireland (-9.4%) and Portugal (-7.7%).
