Industrial New Orders Down by 1.6% in Euro Area in September 2007

The euro area (EA13) industrial new orders index fell by 1.6% in September 2007 compared with August 2007. The index rose by 0.8% in August. EU27 new orders decreased by 2.1% in September 2007, after an increase of 1.0% in August. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4 industrial new orders dropped by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27 in September 2007.



In September 2007 compared with September 2006, industrial new orders increased by 2.0% in the euro area and by 4.2% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment grew by 2.8% in the euro area and by 5.5% in the EU27.

Monthly changes

In September 2007 compared with August 2007, new orders for electrical & electronic equipment decreased by 0.8% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU27. Transport equipment declined by 0.8% and 2.6% respectively. Textiles & textile products fell by 1.6% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU27. Manufacturing of machinery & equipment dropped by 1.7% and 1.6% respectively. Basic metals & fabricated metal products decreased by 2.7% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products fell by 3.3% and 2.4% respectively.

In September 2007, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in four, fell in fifteen and remained stable in Italy. The highest increases were recorded in Slovakia (+6.7%) and Sweden (+4.0%), and the largest decreases in Hungary (-13.1%), Denmark (-12.0%) and Bulgaria (-9.3%).

Annual changes

In September 2007 compared with September 2006, new orders for machinery & equipment grew by 13.7% in the euro area and by 13.9% in the EU27. Manufacturing of chemicals & chemical products increased by 3.4% and 5.6% respectively. Basic metals & fabricated metal products rose by 2.8% in the euro area and by 3.0% in the EU27. Manufacturing of electrical & electronic equipment decreased by 2.0% and 0.4% respectively. Textiles & textile products declined by 2.4% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27. Transport equipment fell by 4.5% in the euro area but rose by 3.4% in the EU27.

In September 2007, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in thirteen and fell in seven. The highest increases were registered in Poland (+53.1%), Lithuania (+22.8%) and Slovakia (+16.7%), and the largest decreases in Latvia (-15.9%), Bulgaria (-6.9%) and Greece (-4.5%).
