Industrial New Orders Down By 1.2% In Euro Area in August 2008

In August 2008 compared with July 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index fell by 1.2%. In July the index increased by 2.0%. In the EU27 new orders decreased by 1.4% in August 2008, after growing by 2.9% in July. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders increased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27.

In August 2008 compared with August 2007, industrial new orders declined by 6.6% in the euro area and by 6.7% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment dropped by 7.5% in both zones.

Monthly changes

In August 2008 compared with July 2008, new orders for machinery & equipment rose by 2.3% in the euro area and by 5.6% in the EU27. Electrical & electronic equipment grew by 1.1% in the euro area, but fell by 0.9% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products gained 0.3% and 0.5% respectively. Chemicals & chemical products decreased by 0.5% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU27. Manufacturing of textiles & textile products dropped by 6.5% and 3.5% respectively. Transport equipment fell by 10.6% in the euro area and by 10.7% in the EU27.

In August 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in five and fell in fourteen. The highest increases were recorded in Ireland (+7.2%), Latvia (+6.7%) and Germany (+3.3%), and the largest decreases in Bulgaria (-11.0%), Greece (-10.0%), Estonia (-7.4%) and France (-7.2%).

Annual changes

In August 2008 compared with August 2007, new orders for chemicals & chemical products fell by 1.8% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU27. Manufacturing of basic metals & fabricated metal products declined by 3.1% and 2.1% respectively. Electrical & electronic equipment decreased by 5.2% in the euro area and by 7.1% in the EU27. Manufacturing of machinery & equipment declined by 8.0% and 8.5% respectively. Transport equipment dropped by 13.7% in the euro area and by 13.5% in the EU27. Manufacturing of textiles & textile products fell by 19.5% and 18.2% respectively.

In August 2008, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in four and fell in fifteen. The highest increases were registered in Latvia (+29.1%) and Romania (+16.1%), and the most significant falls in Sweden (-14.8%), France (-14.4%), Spain (-12.3%) and Denmark (-11.6%).
