Euro area: Construction Output up by 0.6%

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production grew by 0.6% in the euro area (EA13) and by 1.1% in the EU27 in January 2007, compared to the previous month. In December 2006, production increased by 0.9% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU27.



Compared to January 2006, output in January 2007 gained 10.4% in the euro area and 7.3% the EU27, after rises of 8.8% in the euro area and 2.3% in the EU27 in December 2006.

Monthly comparison

Among the EU27 Member States for which data are available for January 2007, construction output rose in eight Member States and fell in five. The most significant increases were recorded in Portugal (+6.6%), the United Kingdom (+5.2%) and Germany (+4.1%). The largest decreases were registered in Belgium (-2.9%), Poland -2.0%) and Spain (-1.8%).

Building construction rose by 0.2% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU27, after increases of 1.0% and 0.6% respectively in December 2006. Civil engineering grew by 1.0% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27, after rises of 1.0% and 0.5% respectively in the previous month.

Annual comparison

In January 2007, among the EU27 Member States for which data are available, construction output rose in eleven Member States and fell in two. The largest increases were recorded in Poland (+60.3%), Slovenia (+46.7%) and Germany (+35.3%). The only decreases were registered in the United Kingdom (-9.6%) and Portugal (-7.1%).

Building construction rose by 9.3% in the euro area and by 6.2% in the EU27, after increases of 8.7% and 2.2% respectively in December 2006. Civil engineering grew by 12.5% in the euro area and by 12.8% in the EU27, after rises of 7.7% and 2.6% respectively in the previous month.
