Euro Area Securities Issues Statistics in July 2008

The annual growth rate of the outstanding amount of debt securities issued by euro area residents increased from 6.8% in June 2008 to 7.0% in July. For the outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents, the annual growth rate was 0.7% in July 2008, the same as in June.

New issuance of debt securities by euro area residents totalled EUR 1,154 billion in July 2008). As redemptions came to EUR 1,080 billion, net issues amounted to EUR 74 billion. The annual growth rate of outstanding debt securities issued by euro area residents increased from 6.8% in June 2008 to 7.0% in July.

As regards the sectoral breakdown, the annual growth rate of outstanding debt securities issued by nonfinancial corporations decreased from 4.0% in June 2008 to 2.9% in July. For the monetary financial institutions (MFIs) sector, this growth rate increased from 8.1% in June 2008 to 8.4% in July. The annual growth rate of outstanding debt securities issued by financial corporations other than MFIs decreased from 23.0% in June 2008 to 21.9% in July. For the general government, this growth rate increased from 1.5% in June 2008 to 2.1% in July.

As regards the maturity breakdown, the annual growth rate of outstanding short-term debt securities increased from 21.1% in June 2008 to 22.2% in July. The annual growth rate of outstanding short-term debt securities issued by MFIs decreased from 30.7% to 30.1% during the same period. For long-term debt securities, the annual growth rate was 5.3% in July 2008, compared with 5.2% in June. The annual growth rate of outstanding long-term debt securities issued by MFIs increased from 4.8% to 5.1% during the same period. The annual growth rate of outstanding fixed rate long-term debt securities increased from 2.8% in June 2008 to 3.0% in July. The annual growth rate of outstanding variable rate long-term debt securities decreased from 11.7% in June 2008 to 11.4% in July.

Concerning the currency breakdown, the annual growth rate of outstanding euro-denominated debt securities increased from 7.1% in June 2008 to 7.4% in July. For debt securities in other currencies, this growth rate was 3.7% in July 2008, compared with 3.6% in June.

The seasonally adjusted three-month annualised growth rate of outstanding debt securities issued by euro area residents increased from 7.7% in June 2008 to 9.0% in July.

New issuance of quoted shares by euro area residents totalled EUR 12.8 billion in July 2008. As redemptions came to EUR 3.4 billion, net issues amounted to EUR 9.4 billion. The annual growth rate of the outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents (excluding valuation changes) was 0.7% in July 2008, the same as in June. The annual growth rate of quoted shares issued by non-financial corporations decreased from 0.3% in June 2008 to 0.1% in July.

For monetary financial institutions, it increased from 1.8% in June 2008 to 2.8% in July. For financial corporations other than MFIs, this growth rate was 2.5% in July 2008, compared with 2.4% in June.

The outstanding amount of quoted shares issued by euro area residents totalled EUR 4,962 billion at the end of July 2008. Compared with EUR 6,731 billion at the end of July 2007, this represents an annual decrease of 26.3% in the value of the stock of quoted shares in July 2008, compared with an annual decrease of 27.2% in June, mainly due to market valuation changes.
