Euro Area Production in Construction up by 0.7% - June 2013

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.8% in the EU27 in June 2013, compared with the previous month, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May 2013, production rose by 0.5% and 0.3% respectively.

Compared with June 2012, production decreased by 3.0% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU27 in June 2013.

Monthly comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for June 2013, production in construction rose in four, fell in six and remained stable in Spain, France and Hungary. The increases were registered in Slovenia (+10.5%), Poland (+5.3%), Germany (+1.6%) and the Czech Republic (+1.3%), and the largest decreases in Romania (-2.4%), Portugal (-2.2%) and Sweden (-0.9%).

Building construction grew by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27, after +0.2% and 0.0% respectively in May 2013. Civil engineering rose by 1.3% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU27, after +0.6% and +0.7% respectively in the previous month.

Annual comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for June 2013, production in construction fell in ten and rose in three. The largest decreases were registered in Poland (-16.3%), Portugal (-12.0%), Slovakia (-10.7%) and the Czech Republic (-9.8%), and the increases in Hungary (+12.5%), Spain (+4.1%) and Sweden (+3.1%).

Building construction decreased by 3.1% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU27, after -3.7% and -3.6% respectively in May 2013. Civil engineering fell by 3.0% in the euro area and by 2.5% in the EU27, after -4.9% and -6.7% respectively in the previous month.
