Germany, more than a third of EU27 exports to South Korea and almost a quarter of EU27 imports
Among the EU27 Member States, Germany (11.6 bn euro or 36% of EU exports) was by far the largest exporter to South Korea in 2011, followed by France (4.2 bn or 13%), the Netherlands (3.7 bn or 11%), Italy (2.9 bn or 9%) and the United Kingdom (2.8 bn or 9%). Germany (8.2 bn or 23% of EU imports) was also the largest importer, followed by Italy (3.3 bn or 9%) and Slovakia (3.0 bn or 8%). The largest deficits in trade with South Korea were observed in Slovakia (-2.9 bn euro), Poland (-2.1 bn) and the Czech Republic (-1.1 bn), while the largest surpluses were recorded in Germany (+3.4 bn) and France (+1.8 bn).
An EU27 surplus of 3 bn euro for trade in services with South Korea in 2010
In 2010, the EU27 exported 7.6 bn euro of services to South Korea, while imports from South Korea amounted to 4.5 bn, meaning that the EU27 had a surplus of 3.1 bn in trade in services with South Korea in 2010, compared with +2.4 bn in 2009 and +3.1 bn in 2008. The surplus in 2010 was mainly due to other business services and transport (both +0.9 bn) and royalties & license fees (+0.7 bn). South Korea accounted for just over 1% of total extra-EU27 trade in services.
Increase in FDI flows between EU27 and South Korea in 2010
EU27 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into South Korea rose from 0.9 bn euro in 2009 to 2.8 bn in 2010, and South Korean FDI into the EU27 increased from 1.6 bn in 2009 to 3.8 bn in 2010.
