Construction Output Down by 1.4% in Euro Area in October 2011

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 1.4% in the euro area (EA17) and by 1.3% in the EU27 in October 2011, compared with the previous month. In September, production decreased by 1.5% and 1.1% respectively. Compared with October 2010, output in October 2011 decreased by 2.8% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27.

Monthly comparison

In October 2011 compared with September 2011, and among the Member States for which data are available, construction output fell in seven, rose in four, and remained stable in the Czech Republic. The largest decreases were registered in Slovenia (-14.1%), Portugal (-9.7%), Poland and Romania (both -1.5%), and the highest increases in Sweden (+1.1%), the United Kingdom (+0.6%) and Germany (+0.4%).

Building construction decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27, after -0.7% and -1.3% respectively in September. Civil engineering fell by 1.6% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27, after -1.6% and -0.5% respectively in the previous month.

Annual comparison

In October 2011 compared with October 2010, and among the Member States for which data are available, construction output fell in ten and rose in three. The largest decreases were registered in Slovenia (-25.3%), Portugal (-11.3%) and Bulgaria (-9.5%), and the increases in Poland (+9.4%), Sweden (+7.3%) and Germany (+1.6%).

Building construction decreased by 2.5% in the euro area and by 2.2% in the EU27, after +0.3% and +0.4% respectively in September. Civil engineering fell by 3.6% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU27, after -1.0% and +2.2% respectively in the previous month.
