Construction Output Down by 0.6% in the Euro Area in June 2008

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production decreased by 0.6% in the euro area (EA15) and by 1.5% in the EU27 in June 2008, compared with the previous month. In May, production increased by 0.1% and 0.7% respectively.

Compared with June 2007, output in June 2008 dropped by 2.4% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU27.

Monthly comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for June 2008, construction output rose in six and fell in seven. The most significant increases were registered in Portugal and Romania (both +2.9%) and Poland (+2.6%). The largest decreases were recorded in Slovenia (-5.8%), the United Kingdom (-5.4%) and Spain (-3.1%).

Building construction fell by 0.6% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU27, after -0.1% and +0.5% respectively in May. Civil engineering decreased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 3.2% in the EU27, after +1.5% and +3.7% respectively in the previous month.

Annual comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for June 2008, construction output rose in nine and fell in four. The highest increases were recorded in Poland (+20.8%), Slovenia (+14.9%), Romania (+12.7%) and Bulgaria (+10.3%). The largest decreases were registered in Spain (-15.9%) and the United Kingdom (-4.7%).

Building construction decreased by 3.0% in the euro area and by 2.1% in the EU27, after -1.9% and +0.2% respectively in May. Civil engineering fell by 1.2% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27, after -1.4% and +3.5% respectively in the previous month.
